How To Regulate Your Emotions

Learning to regulate your emotions takes time and practice. Many of us were definitely not taught how to do this as young children, so be gentle with yourself as you learn.

When we lash out in anger, we hurt those around us and are left feeling guilt and shame. Everyone has anger outbursts. Anger is the tip of the iceberg, and underneath it are feelings of hurt and fear.

But it doesn’t have to get to this point. What if you learned how to regulate your emotions before letting them take over you? In the moment of an outburst, this might seem impossible. However, by taking precautionary measures and learning to manage their emotions before something triggers you is life-changing.

So how do we even begin to regulate our emotions? Here are some ways to start:

  • Self-care: I know it’s become a buzzword, but truly, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to fill up your cup. Self-preservation and making sure to tend to your own needs, feelings, and desires ensures that you will have more control in regulating your emotions, instead of letting them take over you.

  • Mindfulness: Simply by noticing your surroundings and becoming a bit more present throughout your day allows you to create some space between your mind and potential triggers. Practicing mindfulness before your emotions heighten (e.g., during neutral moments) is a great way to make it an ingrained part of your behavior.

  • Deep breathing: You can reset your entire nervous system through breathwork. While releasing stress through meditation and mindfulness is incredibly important, deep breathing allows tension and trauma to be released through the body. Millions of people have had great success with Wim Hoff’s breathing method, which you can try here

  • Self-compassion: Most importantly, give yourself loads of self-compassion. You’re human. You will mess up. You will not always be able to perfectly regulate your emotions. That’s okay! Be gentle with yourself, patient with yourself, and forgive yourself.
