Self-care for bad mental health days
Sometimes, we just don’t feel good. No matter what we try, it feels like we can’t shake this feeling of darkness, sadness, or apathy. We try to turn a bad day around and have a do-over, but still – it feels like pushing against a current.
If you’ve ever felt this way (or are currently feeling this way), you are not alone. You are human! When you’re having a bad mental health day, it’s easy to feel like it will last forever. The idea of feeling better can seem out of reach.
Over the years of working with my clients, I’ve seen that there are certain things that actually do make a difference. Today, I’m going to share these tips with you:
Watch a funny show or movie
Ever wish you could change the channel of your mind? Watching a funny movie or show is kind of like doing that. It gives your mind a much-needed break from whatever it’s struggling with and brings in lighter energy.
Consider creating a go-to list with your favorite hilarious YouTube videos, TikToks, shows, or movies that you can reach for when you’re struggling.
Even taking just a few moments for laughter is a deeply cathartic experience. It releases signals to your brain and body that you are safe and don’t need to be in a state of fight or flight.
Make your bed
If you’re having a tough time getting anything done and starting to feel like today’s been a failure – make your bed. It’s simple. It might seem too simple. Making your bed is a reflection of your mental state. It shows you that even if today has felt like a flop, you at least make your bed and accomplished something.
It brings a sense of order to the chaos of the day and can provide a boost of confidence in your ability to successfully complete a task. Then, you can build on that confidence.
Step outside your house at least once and soak up 5 minutes of sun
Vitamin D, people! It’s so important for mental health. If you’ve been stuck inside all day – please, go outside and take some deep breaths. It can feel depressing to be at home all day, without a glimpse of sunlight and fresh air. Even if you don’t have a lot of time, make sure to just step out for a few minutes and let yourself connect to some element of nature.
Cuddle with your support animal
If you have a furry friend close by, make sure to give them lots of snuggles and love. Having an animal around is extremely beneficial for mental health, and can be a source of comfort on bad mental health days.
Consider downloading the Finch app to set up doable tasks you can finish in exchange for small in-app rewards. It’s a fun and simple way to encourage and motivate you.
Eat at least one healthy meal
Comfort foods seem even more delicious on bad mental health days, and they certainly have their place. In addition, try to eat some veggies or fruit at least once daily. These nutrients have a positive effect on mental health and can provide a boost of energy on low mental health days.
Shower and get dressed
When you’re feeling bad, even showering and getting dressed can seem like a challenging task. Things seem to take more energy and it’s tempting to stay in your sweats all day. I get it.
If you can, find the energy to get yourself in the shower and then put on a new set of clothes. This is game-changing, friends. Getting in a warm shower and feeling clean can be exactly the reset your body and mind need for a better mental health day. You can even visualize the water washing away your stress and anxiety. Maybe put on some music and cry. Let yourself be cleansed and refreshed. Then, put on a clean pair of clothes (comfy ones encouraged!) and allow yourself to begin anew.
More than anything, give yourself lots of love and compassion. Especially on bad mental health days, the last thing you need is to beat yourself up. Take it one small step at a time, celebrate the little wins, and know that this funk will pass. You got this.
